CTBTO installs cutting-edge data system in Yemen, advancing regional capacity
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) installed a Capacity Building System (CBS) at Yemen’s National Data Centre (NDC) in Aden, part of the Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Board - with support from UN entities on the ground.
The installation on 30 April 2025 marks a crucial step towards expanding NDC capabilities across the Middle East and South Asia region.

The CBS integrates both hardware and software components. The hardware setup includes a CBS server, two workstations and a laptop. On the software side, the system features an NDC software package known as “NDC-in-a-box,” which facilitates the reception, processing, and analysis of data from CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS).
The NDC relies on 42 solar panels and 12 batteries, which provide a steady power supply. Starlink ensures reliable internet access, enabling efficient data downloads and system updates.
This CBS installation is the 15th under the National Data Centres-for-All (NDCs4All) initiative, launched by the CTBTO in June 2022.

The initiative supports countries that have not yet established an NDC, also providing CBS equipment and tools, as well as hands-on training in hardware and software.
With a particular focus on developing States, the initiative aims to ensure that all States Signatories can fully access and benefit from the extensive data collected by more than 300 monitoring facilities through their NDCs.
Beyond nuclear verification, CTBTO data has become a valuable resource for civil and scientific applications, including early warning systems for earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, as well as research on the environment, oceanography, and marine ecosystems.
