CTBTO’s internship programme provides university students and young graduates across a wide range of academic backgrounds with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests and within a multi-cultural and international environment.
This programme is open to individuals who are enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate programmes, or equivalent institutions. The duration of the internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
CTBTO’s interns contribute to the work of our technical divisions responsible for the International Monitoring System, International Data Centre, and On-Site Inspection. Interns acquire experience in the areas of data analysis, engineering as well as operational and technical inspection support services. Internships are also available in legal affairs, external relations, public information, and human resources.
All internships take place at CTBTO Headquarters in Vienna, Austria where you will be immersed in a multicultural, diverse, inclusive, and international environment.

Internship FAQs
An intern’s work schedule shall be agreed in advance of the internship with their supervisor. Most of our internships are full-time, however some interns may work part-time based on an agreement with the supervisor and always in accordance with the normal working hours of the CTBTO.
Interns at CTBTO are granted two and a half days of leave per month starting from the first month of the internship.
For successful candidates who are offered an internship and who do not receive any other financial support from an institution, university or other source, a stipend of EUR 500 may be provided, subject to funds availability.
The stipend does not constitute a salary, but is rather an allowance to help to cover basic subsistence costs during the internship period.
An additional maximum of EUR 500 may be provided for accommodation upon submission of the appropriate proof of a rental agreement with a non-family third party.
Candidates will be asked during the application process whether they anticipate receiving financial support and how much. If an intern receives financial support from an institution, university or other source, they must provide all relevant documentation prior to commencing an internship with CTBTO.
Upon award of an internship, the intern shall be responsible for arranging their travel covering all travel costs to Vienna, Austria and living expenses during the internship period.
CTBTO internship vacancies are announced on the website or advertised through our social media accounts throughout the year. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed at various points throughout the year depending on needs within the PTS.
